Schwangau Overview

Schwangau is a small village in the eastern Allgäu region of Bavaria—the next-to-last town on Germany’s “Romantic Road.” Just imagine: Schwangau is situated less than one mile from the world-famous and spectacular Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (Hohenschwangau vacation rentals | Hohenschwangau travel guide) castles. Staying in your very own vacation cottage within walking distance of these castles is an unforgettable experience.

Schwangau is a municipality in the district of Ostallgäu in Bavaria, Germany. The village lies 4 km from the larger town of Füssen (Füssen vacation rentals | Füssen travel guide) and just 1.5 km from Hohenschwangau, a collection of tourist-oriented facilities adjacent to the major tourist attractions of Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau.

Schwangau has no railway station, but is served by buses connecting to Füssen, Hohenschwangau, and other nearby Alpine towns. It is the next-to-last town on the Romantic Road tourist route that terminates in Füssen.

There is a great little camping area right on the Forgensee in a small town called Brunnen right near here. You can see the castle from the campsites and its gorgeous. The campsite also has really nice facilities. Also, If you are in the area you should go to the top of the Tegelburg (by way of walking or cable car). We hiked to the Castle from the top of the Tegelburg (about a 3-3.5 hour hike).

I believe that you can purchase your Neuschwanstein tickets online before you leave. If you wait until you get there, usually only the afternoon tours are available. This means you spend all day in Fussen. We usually take the little tram up the steep hill and walk down later. Your feet will thank you, and your thighs still get a good workout.

My favorite castle of all....Neuschwanstein by King Ludwig. Absolutely gorgeous inside and outside the castle. Beautiful sceneries...real breathtaking! I am very proud to say that I have been there to see it and would love to go back again soon!

I also strongly recommend Schwangau, the village where Neuschwanstein castle is (the one that looks like Cinderella castle), right on the border to Austria. Schwangau has Alpine mountains, meadows, 6 lakes and 4 castles around it and offers skiing in winter and hiking, canoeing, sailing, surfing, cycling, mountain biking, paragliding, high rope climbing, rock climbing, horse riding, golf / tennis in summer. Loads of friends from Dubai, UK, Switzerland and US have come to visit us and they all love it (most had never heard about the place before). Closest (international) airport is Munich or Memmingen. The closest town is Fuessen. Munich is about 1.5 hours away.
