Schliersee is situated between Tegernsee (Tegernsee vacation rentals | Tegernsee travel guide) and the Inn Valley, about 31 miles southeast of Munich, near the Austrian border. It lies at an altitude of 2,555 ft. on the shore of one of the most beautiful and clean bathing lakes. The excellent quality of the water in the Schliersee is due in large part to the construction of a system for purifying waste water from the area surrounding the lake. Already since the early 19th century, Schliersee built its reputation as an idyllic holiday destination. Nowadays Schliersee, together with the districts of Neuhaus, Fischhausen and Spitzingsee is among the most popular holiday regions in Bavaria. Hiking, mountain biking and water sports are all time favorites and comes winter, more then 15 miles of groomed ski runs, 7 cross-country trails and many natural toboggan runs turn Schliersee into a snow white paradise.
Things to See in Schliersee
In the Schlierseer Heritage Museum, home in one of the oldest houses in the village built around 1500; farm work and life of the last 500 years are lovingly displayed. Besides the living and sleeping rooms in the museum, you can also view the judge and prison rooms. The collection includes furniture and utensils and a collection of Schlierseer glass products. Another great museum not to be missed is the Markus Wasmeier Farm and Ski Museum on the south bank of the Schliersee. The museum displays farm life at the beginning of the 18th century. Old farms in the Bavarian Oberland were dismantled at the original site, restored and rebuilt on the museums site.
On the Vineyard Hill stands the Gothic chapel of St. George from the 14th century, featuring a baroque altar from 1624. From the vineyard one also has a beautiful view of the town and the lake. At the northern entrance to the village is the baroque church of St. Martin with the Jenner Wine Grave. Finally, located in the center of town you will discover the St Sixtus church with a Holy Trinity group by Erasmus Grasser and ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The Schlierseer Farmer's Theater, founded in 1892, is the oldest theater of its kind in Bavaria, and with regular performances still going strong.

In June it's about sport, when the Schliersee Alpine Triathlon is held. This is a German championship event and includes the Olympic distances of 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running. One of the most beautiful and colorful festivals in the Bavarian Oberland is held in August each year, in honor of the churches patron St. Sixtus. On this day fisherman come with their beautiful decorated wooden boats to the south bank of the Schliersee. Expect brass bands, colorful costumes and Bavarian Gemütlichkeit
. Another event drawing visitors from near and far is the St. Leonhard Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after All Saints' Day in November. Approximately 80 festively decorated carriages drawn by 4 horses, and filled with people in historical costumes, arrive to take part in the Pilgrimage day's celebration, which include a mess, held in the open. And then it's time again for the Advent season, when the townscape offers a fairy-tale backdrop to the numerous festive events and performances. Schliersee is worth a long vacation and rightfully earned its reputation as a popular recreational area in Bavaria and Germany.
