Lenggries Overview
Lenggries is located in the Isar river valley at the foothills of the Alps. At over 1500 meters, Brauneck Mountain—accessible by tram—offers spectacular views and is a popular destination for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
Lenggries sits about 700 meters above sea level. East of the city are the Tegernseer Mountains, and the home mountain of Lenggries is the Brauneck with an elevation of over 1555 meters above sea level. Brauneck is a great ski location with ski lifts. The town has about 9,500 inhabitants and is mostly dependent on the tourism business that is focused on hiking and skiing.

There are many things to do in Lenggries. You can hike in pretty much every direction and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views, or breathe the fresh mountain air. Enjoy this beautiful village in summer and winter. Nearby cultural attractions are Church St. Jacob (Italian baroque style, built 1722), the Calvary hill near Hohenburg (geometric Style, as opposed to the one in Bad Tölz), Castle Hohenburg, Exile of Adolf I of Luxembourg, the Evang.-Luth. Church (built 1952), and the Heimatmuseum Lenggries (Home-Museum), exhibiting locally related items.

Lenggries is a great place to ski. I worked there as a Ski Instructor for Braun Eck Ski School and loved it over GAP and Berchtesgaden.

Take the Brauneck cable car to the peak of Brauneck mountain. The mountain (1556 meters) offers not only a myriad of ski possibilities during the winter, but also a variety of trails and activities in the summer.
Indoor Waterworld "Isarwelle"

The "Isarwelle" indoor/outdoor swimming pool offers the whole spectrum of whirlpool fun, including a circular flowing canal called the wild water run; the classic whirlpool baths (see picture) are kept at 34° C, whereas the recreation pool (1.35 meters deep) remains a constant 31°C. A canal for swimmers connects the hall to the outdoor pool (picture) (31°C 1.35 meters deep), where there is a rock garden, the previously mentioned flowing canal, and a sun-bathing area.
Church of St. Jacob

The Italian baroque St. Jakob church daties back to 1722. Close by is the gothic Mariahilf cemetery chapel from the 18th century with its more than 500-year old panel and a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary from the 16th century. Don´t miss the remarkable collection of votive pictures about 1 km south of Lenggries on the Calvary.
Local History Museum of Lenggries

The local history museum in Lenggries, directly situated on the town hall square, depicts in seven exhibition areas valuable culture-historical objects from the Isarwinkel. Local history dating back to the first settlement of the Isarwinkel is exhibited as well as flora and historical fauna displays. Hours are Monday - Friday 8 am - 12pm and 2 pm -5 pm; during high season also open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 am - 12 pm.

More about the History of Lenggries
Lenggries first appears in documentation in the Year 1220. For many years Lenggries was the only settlement on the langen Gries
ruled by the Barons of Hörwarth from the Hofmark castle. In 1705 the first resistance against the Austrians was organized in Lenggries. This later lead to the battle of Sendlinger Bauernschlacht. From 1808 to 1818 edicts from the Bavarian municipality formed Lenggries into a politically independent municipality. In 1924 Lenggries was connected to the Railroad (known todays as the Bayerische Oberlandbahn), which starts the importance of tourism for Lenggries' economy. From 1935 until 1939 Gebirgsjäger (also known as mountain infantry) were stationed in Lenggries.
